The Hillside High School Marching Band is a 110 piece marching machine steeped in a rich tradition of Excellence. Hillside's band has traveled extensively thoughout the United States and has been featured in the movie Ink Well, as well as performed for President Jimmy Carter. Following the groundwork laid by Philmore Hall, Joseph Mitchell, Clarke Edgerton, and Xavier Cason, the current Hornets aspire to keep the Legacy alive and strong.
Hillside High School band is a competitive ensemble that participates in competitions locally and regionally. In 2010, Hillside won the North Carolina High Stepping Competition and was crowned State Champions. The Mighty Marching Hornets have won numerous Grand Championship Trophies and honors. During the 2013 band season, the band finished 2nd Runner Up in the State High Stepping Competition. The band also finished as the grand champion at the Jimmy N. James Bucktown Classic and the Adrian Carrol Battle of the Bands.
